Swen Takes Training to New Heights

Swen De Ruyter
Swen De Ruyter

An email from Jakarta, a secret desire to return to pro basketball and a holiday to Bali were all fortuitous factors leading to Swen De Ruyter’s current gig as Personal Trainer, JSA coach and Social Basketball coordinator extraordinaire at Canggu Club! Though it appears that the island’s premier sports and recreation venue and its members are also clear winners as Swen brings with him a wealth of international experience and expertise.

Hailing from Breda, Netherlands, Swen De Ruyter is the oldest of three brothers and, as the tallest among his peers, it was little surprise that he showed distinct promise in sports at an early age, particularly basketball!

With an introduction to the game at age 7 and following several years of dedicated training, Swen earned an invitation to play for the Dutch National Youth Team at the tender age of 14. Despite training with pro basketball players well before he reached double decades, his parents insisted he complete his Masters Diploma in Sports Fitness/ Promotion and Personal Training first. A move which paid obvious dividends as he was offered a top position as a personal trainer, working alongside a ‘movement scientist’ with the Italian Olympic Committee. An exciting position which involved creating, developing and conducting tests on internationally acclaimed elite athletes and recreational sportspeople alike.

Fast forward a few years and a successful business as a personal trainer and Swen received the email that would eventually see Bali beckon. It was an invitation to play pro basketball once again, this time for Jakarta based Indonesian Warriors in the ASEAN comp. After a stellar season and a close game in the final, the season concluded and a sea change was next on the agenda. With Swen’s sought after skills and expertise, it wasn’t difficult for him to secure tenure and his current position involves personal training at Canggu Club, as well as captaining the very popular Spin Cycle classes at Canggu Club Fitness.

Another important aspect of Swen’s role at Canggu Club is his work as coach of JSA Basketball. “It’s great fun to work with kids and improve their skills. It’s amazing how quickly they develop their skill set! The whole program is so well structured. I follow and note all of their progress and create a basketball passport for them. They love the hard work and the structured approach.”

The latest in Swen’s long list of activities is coordinator of a new Social Basketball night, free for all Canggu Club members, guests and day pass holders. Every Monday evening at 7pm, players of any age or ability can join in and play some ball. So if you fancy yourself as a shooter or dribbler (of the basketball kind of course) or keen for a little one on one, register your interest by emailing:
