FINNS GO GREEN

World Oceans Day 2025 And FINNS Beach Club, Bali

FINNS is an organisation that seeks to give back to the community and the island that it serves.

From reducing the amount of waste that FINNS sends to landfills every month to working to raise awareness of environmental issues and solving social issues, the beach club is always looking to make the world a better place.

This month, our team has had the good fortune to be able to get involved with World Oceans Day, and this is everything you need to know about it.

What Is World Oceans Day?

The ocean is the most important part of the global ecosystem, and it covers over 70% of the planet’s surface. It is the source of all life and ultimately sustains all of the creatures that live on the land as well as in the water.

Our oceans produce, at least, half of the oxygen on the planet. They contain 97% of all the water on the planet and 99% of all the living space globally by volume!

They are home to the greatest levels of biodiversity, and over a billion people around the world depend on protein from the sea for their daily sustenance.

40 million people are employed directly or indirectly in ocean-based industries, too.

In short, the ocean is a big deal to all of us.

But the planet’s oceans are in need of our support because things aren’t looking as good as they once did under the waves.

90% of the Earth’s big fish populations have been wiped out, and more than half of the coral reefs are gone. Humanity is taking far too much from the ocean, and it cannot be replaced naturally.

The world’s oceans are also gradually filling up with plastic, which is a serious problem, too. It’s also one of the issues that we can all help to address.

That means we all need to work in partnership to bring about some much-needed balance with the oceans of the planet. We need to restore the bounty and vibrant life to the waters and ensure that all life can thrive again.

Thus, the United Nations (UN) has declared that there will be a World Oceans Day annually in June. To help ensure that people are aware of this pressing problem and to inspire them to take action to make our oceans a better place.

This year’s World Oceans Day, like previous years, had a theme. “Wonder: Sustaining What Sustains Us”.

This reflects on the fact that this year is the end of the UN Decade of World Ocean Science, and to celebrate the World Ocean Conference.

Don’t Forget Bali Ocean Week

This week is also part of Bali Ocean Week, a local celebration which focuses on education, direct action, inclusion and community.

There are many events across the island that help to support this effort.

How Did FINNS Take Part In World Oceans Day 2025 And Bali Ocean Week

World Oceans Day 2025 was on June 7th, 2025. FINNS organised a Canggu Beach Clean Up drive, which far exceeded our daily activities of keeping Berawa Beach clean and tidy.

Participants came from the communities, schools, and businesses of Berawa, including Dinas Lingkungan Hidup dan Kelautan (DLHK) Badung, SD Negeri 3 Tibubeneng, Desa Adat Berawa, Desa Dinas Tibubeneng, KOA D’Surfer Hotel, Secana Beachtown Resort & Residences, Atlas Beach Club, Swarga Suites, The Wina Villa, The Komu Canggu Bali, SMP Negeri 4 Canggu, Ametis Villa Bali, Aston Canggu Beach Resort, Legong Keraton Beach Hotel, and the lv8 Resort Hotel.

Over 320 individuals joined in the beach clean-up in total. They were divided into two groups, each of which started in a different area.

The groups were equipped with cleaning tools and bags to collect non-organic waste separately from organic waste.

They cleaned both Batu Bolong Beach and Berawa Beach from one end to the other and finished at the Perancak Temple area.

Once the clean-up had finished, our friends at EcoBali held a training session for all participants on proper waste sorting to ensure that all of the waste collected would be processed correctly.

In addition to the human task force, FINNS also deployed its new beach cleaning robot, BeBot, which cleans the beach after human cleaning and goes deeper into the sand than human cleaners can manage, removing far more micro plastic waste particles including cigarette butts and styrofoam.

We would also like to offer a special thanks to our sponsor for this event, Bacardi.

How Did World Oceans Day 2025 Turn Out For FINNS And The Clean-Up Team?

The day was a great success; not only did the message of the day reach every business and community in the local area, but our 300+ volunteers and the Bebot robot removed an incredible 303 Kg of waste from the beaches!

That’s nearly ⅓ of a ton of waste! This garbage was then separated into 179 Kg of organic waste, which can be used in composting, and 124 Kg of inorganic waste, which can be recycled and reused, with very little of it being disposed of in a landfill.

Is That It Until The Next World Oceans Day?

No! FINNS will continue to clean and maintain a large part of Berawa Bach on a daily basis as it always does.

Our beach clean-up team works tirelessly to ensure that our guests and visitors to Bali can enjoy a beach that is not covered in trash. We also organize a monthly Canggu Clean Up event with other Berawa-based businesses and community groups.

The BeBot robot, which recently joined the team, also works on Berawa Beach every day to give the sand a thorough deep cleaning after the human team has finished their work.

Members of staff throughout our organisation also join in the beach clean-up exercise on a regular basis. We believe that it’s important for everyone at FINNS to play a part in making the world a better place.

We know that you can’t fix all the ocean’s problems in a single day, and at FINNS, we are determined to do our part all year round to improve the little stretch of ocean that we have direct influence over.

FAQs

When Is World Oceans Day?

World Oceans Day takes place every June and it’s a celebration of the world’s oceans and our reliance as a species on the health and well-being of the oceans.

What Is The Theme For World Oceans Day 2026?

As we go to press, the theme for next year’s day has not been announced. Though the 4th UN Ocean Conference, which will be held on World Oceans Day in 2026, will be held in Kenya.

How Should You Celebrate World Oceans Day?

Get your local community together and then get them into or onto a body of ocean water. You could do a beach clean-up, a sponsored walk or run, bird watching, snorkelling, etc., anything that makes people more aware of the impact of the oceans is an awesome thing.

Is World Ocean Day The Same As World Water Day?

No. World Water Day is held in March of every year and is meant to highlight the plight of the over 2 billion people who do not have access to clean, safe drinking water. This hinges around the UN sustainable development goal number 6, which targets 2030 for every person on Earth to have water and sanitation.

Final Thoughts On World Oceans Day 2025

FINNS and the local community came together for a very successful beach clean-up here on the beaches of Canggu in 2025.

It helped to promote the objectives of World Oceans Day and to clean up two of the most important and visited beaches in Bali for the tourist industry.

The beach club and other FINNS businesses will continue to strive to make a positive impact on the environment and ecosystem of Bali all year round, and we look forward to announcing future projects for a better future of this beautiful island soon.
