There are numerous reasons why I am delighted my children attend Canggu Community School, their pastoral care and community mindedness most definitely not the least of them! So it was little surprise when my cherubs announced that the student body at the school had requested they organise their very own fundraiser to support the efforts of aid workers assisting the victims of the recent earthquakes in Nepal.
Director Beccy Fox recalls, “The requests came into my office thick and fast! ‘Can we have a bake sale?’ ‘Can we have a non-uniform day?’ ‘Can we sell our toys to raise money for Nepal?’”
The result of all of these requests was the market day held at the school on Friday May 8th. It was a totally student led event with stalls, games and activities all planned and manned by the different year groups from pre school to year 12.
Students brought in toys, books and baked goods to sell at their stalls which were well patronised by mums, dads, grandparents, friends, teachers, students and siblings alike in an effort to fill the coffers for earthquake aid. In addition to the goods donated by the families at the school, Arvy from popular Batu Belig nail salon Think Pink, very generously donated treatment vouchers to be raffled off on market day. Of course, as this was the Friday prior to Mothers’ Day, tickets sold like hot cakes with many hoping to win a special gift (and brownie points) for their number one mum!
After the stallholders had pedaled their wares and the games were over, accounting staff in the finance office were left with the momentous task of tallying the mountain of notes and coins! Within several hours the announcement was made that the grand total raised was an amazing
Rp 54,984,200 plus an additional USD500!!!
Hearty congratulations must go to the entire Canggu School community for their fantastic fundraising efforts. This money has been sent to the Lincoln School in Kathmandu, a CIS accredited international school and fellow member of EARCOS. The money sent will go towards rebuilding local homes providing medical care and supporting the communities. With all of the humanitarian aid and funding headed in the ‘right’ direction, it is hoped that the earthquake victims can at least make a start on rebuilding their homes and lives. A job well done CCS. You should be very proud!

Social Responsibility in Action
The recent tragic events in Nepal seemed to strike a chord with many and it has been heartening to see the overwhelming response from those willing to help via donations, fundraising and volunteer efforts. The evening of Thursday May 7th saw a shining example of this social responsibility in action with The Canggu Club hosting The Nepal Earthquake Appeal, with monies raised at the event gazetted for distribution between UNICEF, The Red Cross and the motivated team from Bye Bye Plastic Bags in their efforts to help the victims of the recent earthquakes.
The fundraising evening kicked off after the Junior Sports Academy concluded their AFL Auskick training at 5pm and as the BBQ fired up, raffle ticket sales were running hot! Many who came along to support the event made the most of the cooler evening air, securing a table outside to watch the Bali Geckos in training action.
Inside the The Club House, guests were keen to take advantage of the evening’s special wine prices as well as the chance to ‘taste before buying’ and bar staff were kept on the hop! Outside, crowd numbers were building and guests enjoyed some smooth tunes from popular entertainer Athron, who very generously donated his time and talents on the evening to help support this worthy cause.
7pm came around quickly and it was time to draw the raffle prizes. Local businesses rallied in support of the event by donating fantastic prizes such as accommodation and food and beverage packages. Prizes included a 750K lunch voucher thanks to sensational Barbacoa restaurant, two nights’ accommodation at the gorgeous Komune Hotel, Kermas and The Stones, Legian with first prize being two nights’ accommodation at one of Semara Luxury Villa Resort’s five bedroom villas! Some other lucky attendees were also recipients of extra prize donations such as a Cocoon Medical Spa voucher to the value of one million rupiah, two tickets to the recent Canggu Club Mothers’ Day luncheon and a one million rupiah voucher for food and beverage at Finn’s Beach Club.
Raffle draws done and dusted, guests were treated to an address by the two inspirational young instigators of the Bye Bye Plastic Bags Appeal, Green School students and sisters, Isabel and Melati Wijsen. These eloquent and entrepreneurial young ladies had the crowd engaged and enthusiastic to hear more about the incredible environmental and humanitarian achievements by the largest ‘children driven action group’ the island has ever seen!
On the whole, The Canggu Club Nepal Appeal was a resounding success with a total of Rp 45 million raised on the evening. Guests were clearly keen to do what they could to contribute with raffle ticket sales amassing a not-too-shabby Rp 27.6 million! Rp 1.4 million was received in donations on the night in addition to another Rp 16 million donated by The Canggu Club which went directly to Bye Bye Plastic Bags Nepal Appeal to assist in the purchase of rice to feed the earthquake victims. The remaining amount raised will be distributed to Red Cross and UNICEF to go toward their aid efforts in Nepal.
Special mention must also go to incredible seven year old Ben Breeze who also donated a portion of the monies he has raised through his charity Ben’s Boxes and their gofundme page, to the Bye Bye Plastic Bag campaign. In a climate where sadly, much of the news we hear is negative, it is uplifting to know that generosity, community and compassion is still alive and well!

Fabulous Faces Help to Fund Furry Friends
Heads up ladies! How often do you get the opportunity to meet a top makeup artist and learn their professional secrets? I can’t speak for the rest of you glamorous gals but thanks to Bali’s relentless humidity, my daily makeup mantra stretches as far as a lick of mascara and a swipe of khol and is guaranteed to have me resembling a panda bear by mid morning! Granted, living in the land of smiles rarely requires little more effort than a scraped back pony, a slap of sunscreen and a pair of havaianas, however when we do wish to go that extra mile and glam up for a special event or a night on the tiles, it’s handy to know a few tricks of the trade!
On May 29th, The Canggu Club has invited international make up artist, Debbie Jean to present a workshop sharing some of her professional skills and secrets, with all proceeds from ticket sales going to worthy local cause, the Bali Animal Welfare Association (BAWA).
Sessions will be held in the Verandah Room, with ladies of all ages welcome! Choose from the early session commencing at 8.30am or pop along after lunch from 1.30pm. Prices are Rp270,000 per person and workshops will include anti ageing make up tips (handy for skin that is often exposed to the harsh Bali sun) as well as the latest techniques and products.
During her masterclass, Debbie will highlight the importance of using the right tools and products for applying make up in this tropical climate, dos and don’ts, clever make up illusions and quick application techniques for adapting your look from daytime chic to evening glamour.
Through live demonstrations on workshop participants (pick me! pick me!) Debbie will illustrate how easy it is to use simple techniques to help us transform our look from weary to wow! She is happy to answer questions about skin care and choosing the right product for your skin type as well as handy hints and techniques to help ward off those worrying wrinkles.
Held in the privacy of The Canggu Club’s function room, attendees will also enjoy light refreshments and the opportunity to try out their newly acquired skills without interruption or feeling like the latest public attraction at the Mac counter!
