On April 22nd 2024,148 people gathered on Berawa Beach, armed with gloves, trash bags, and a strong resolve to combat marine pollution on Earth Day. Berawa Beach is famously known for its vibrant surf culture, but unfortunately faces a plastic waste problem.
People from the local community, students of SD 2 Tibubeneng, and FINNS staff spent hours cleaning the beach from plastic bottles, food wrappers, and discarded fishing gear. The beach cleanup aimed to restore the beach’s pristine condition and raise awareness about the impact of plastic pollution on marine ecosystems. One participant, Gede Widiana – Housekeeping Manager of FINNS Beach Club, emphasized on the importance of such efforts: “As FINNS, we have a strong connection to nature and a responsibility to protect it, no matter where we are in the world. Cleaning up Bali’s beaches is one of the ways we can contribute to the global fight against pollution.” After the clean-up, the group moved to Pura Perancak for a tree-planting session. The participants planted a variety of native tree species, including mangroves, which play a crucial role in coastal protection and biodiversity.
This Earth Day exemplified how collaboration is the key to make a positive impact on the planet. Together doing beach cleaning and tree planting, they contributed to the preservation of Bali’s natural beauty and set an inspiring example for others to follow. When the sun set on Earth Day, the clean beaches and newly planted trees stood as a testament to keep the environment clean and green.
